Something I’ve been thinking about lately — both in real estate and in life — is the relationship between talent, effort, and the rules we think we’re supposed to follow.
Most people assume success comes from being naturally good at something. Talent matters. Experience matters. Skill matters. Of course they do.
But over and over again — whether I’m helping a client prepare a home for sale, coaching a buyer through changing market conditions, or working on my own business — the deciding factor usually comes down to something much simpler:
Effort, combined with curiosity.
Consistent effort.
Especially when you don’t feel like giving it.
The gap between success and almost success is rarely intelligence or ability. It’s the willingness to keep going when it would be easier not to.
That effort shows up in places most people never see:
Preparing a home for sale when you’re already exhausted from work
Bringing in professionals to help get the home ready, even when you think you can do it yourself or want to save a dollar
Reviewing finances before buying when you’d rather avoid the numbers
Putting in the work to improve those numbers instead of hoping they’ll fix themselves
Trying again when the first plan doesn’t work — because there’s almost always more than one way to reach the same goal
That invisible effort is often what changes outcomes.
But there’s another side to this.
Working hard doesn’t mean forcing yourself to suffer through a process that clearly isn’t working. Sometimes the problem isn’t effort — it’s the system.
If something feels consistently frustrating or impossible, it’s worth asking:
“Am I following rules that don’t actually serve me?”
In real estate, I see this all the time. People assume:
They must buy at a certain age
They must sell the “correct” way
They must wait until everything is perfect — better rates, better timing, better conditions
They should follow advice from well-meaning friends who’ve watched a few TV shows or bought one house years ago
Sometimes success doesn’t come from pushing harder inside those assumptions — it comes from challenging them.
Work hard.
Work smart.
But also ask why.
Ask:
What is my actual goal?
What outcome am I trying to create?
Is there another path that gets me there more effectively?
Even asking those questions puts you ahead of most people.
The combination of effort and thoughtful adjustment is what creates momentum. And we’re living in a time where information, tools, and perspectives are more accessible than ever — why not use them to your advantage?
As always, if you’re thinking about real estate or just trying to figure out your next step, I’m always happy to talk through your options.
